SEPTEMBER 4-12, 2010
O. Dovzhenko National Film Studio (Prospekt Peremohy 44)

The GOGOLFEST annual international multidisciplinary festival of contemporary art has ended. The Festival programme consisted of five areas: theatre, music, visual art, film and literature.

Nearly 800 artists from almost 20 countries took part in the Festival programme.

Approximately 50 000 people attended the Festival-opening extravaganza on September 4th at Independence Square, featuring a performance by the La Fura dels Baus and "Dakh" Theatres. The event was televised by the First National Channel, with 400 000 viewers.

More than 10 000 people visited the Festival's events over the course of its September 5-12 week-long run at the Dovzhenko Film Studio. No less than 10 events took place per day, including master classes, theatrical productions, concerts, performances and film screenings. Over the course of the Festival, the visual arts programme (VAP) featured the Art Squat, where10 artists lived, offering an all-day programme of "apartment-based" performances, lectures, presentations and concerts.

In addition, the entire Festival was captured on GOGOLFEST-TV,  run by students of the I. Karpenko-Karim Kyiv National University of Theatre, Film and Television. You can catch GOGOLFEST-TV reports and other videos from the Festival videos on our official YouTube channel.

Download high-quality event photos from the Festival's official  Flickr site, as well as from the main Festival site, in the "Press Office" section. We'll be adding more photos to the archives during the week of September 13-17, as we process them.

GOGOLFEST would like to thank all of the volunteers who helped to make the Festival happen: about 150 people took part in the show at Independence Square, providing support with information, guests, logistics, programme services, and press office work.

Festival organizers are planning a pilot project, establishing an innovative educational and production center for contemporary art, uniting music, dance, theatre and visual arts. This center may become the platform for future editions of  GOGOLFEST. September 25, 2010 will see the presentation of the possible new location of the center and the Festival.

In 2010, GOGOLFEST worked for the first time with the Football Federation of Ukraine which, together with the Embassy of Spain and the KM Core Technology Holding Company, provided support for the Festival opening on Independence Square. The Federation, which will host the 2012 European Football Championship, sees the Festival as universal platform of international communication. The UFF hopes that this contemporary art project may become one of the basic formats for meeting the cultural needs of a vast number of the tournament's guests, who will visit our country in two years.

GOGOLFEST'S youth focus is no coincidence. However, its main advantage over the smug and conceited official event is that it deliberately creates a territory, where people can feel themselves part of a community, capable of solving constructive tasks. This applies to objects, as well as the artistic environment, traditionally separate and indifferent to what happens outside its own backyard.

Sergei Vasiliev, theatre critic, columnist at "Kommersant-Weekend»

It is for this continuous and future striving to recall eternal values that GOGOLFEST has a right not only to a full-fledged place in the country's cultural life, unrestricted by traditional difficulties, but also to great respect and even a certain immunity. The most recent GOGOLFEST should, at last, make some people understand that criticizing GOGOLFEST simply makes no sense. It makes no sense because and that it is unique and unparalleled in Ukraine; there are no cultural events on the same level.

From the opening ceremony itself, it was clear that - as opposed to Moscow - the Kyiv Festival is not a means to satisfy someone's ambition (the image-consciousness of the sponsors and government, as well as the egos of the curators and artists), but has become a means of interested and dignified communication.

Sergei Khachaturov, "Vremya Novostei (Russia)

Established several years ago by Vladislav Troitsky, director and manager of the "Dakh" Center, Kyiv's GOGOLFEST has quickly and with relative ease become the main event in the theatrical and artistic life of Kyiv: no one can pose a serious challenge to GOGOLFEST (despite the fact that the government doesn't give a dime to the Festival, and that Mr. Troitsky does it all exclusively with sponsorship funds). in another context, this "monopoly" could be a minus, but it seems that this young festival is in no danger: GOGOLFEST strives to be only more ambitious.

GOGOLFEST is Ukraine's first annual international multidisciplinary festival of contemporary art. The 4th edition of the Festival was held September 4-12, 2010. The five festival programs were theater, music, VAP (Visual Art Program), cinema, literature. A key component of the Festival is its educational focus: All programmes include workshops, lectures and presentations from participants, and projects created jointly by international curators and artists, with the participation of Ukrainian artists, actors and musicians.

The first festival was held in 2007, at the Artistic Arsenal, thanks to the private initiative of  director and founder of "Dakh" Center for the Contemporary Arts, Vladislav Troitsky.  In the years  following. GOGOLFEST received support from the founder of  IT company "Kvazar-Micro, Yevgeny Utkin. The unique space of the Artistic Arsenal defined the format, scale, and look of the Festival. In 2010, due to construction works at the Artistic Arsenal, GOGOLFEST moved to Dovzhenko National Film Studio.

In the four years since its founding,  GOGOLFEST has visited St. Petersburg, Moscow and Perm, staging concerts, performances and exhibitions from Ukrainian artists to great acclaim. Proof of GOGOLFEST's international standing came with the "Pop-Mechanics" Sergei Kuryokhin Grand Prix in Contemporary Art. In 2010-2011, GOGOLFEST plans "landings" in Paris, Edinburgh, Warsaw and  Budapest.
